449 - July 1975! "Midnight Rustler of Gotham City!" Batman is called by Commissioner Gordon to investigate a series of cattle thefts from slaughterhouses! The story involves Batman uncovering a smuggling operation linked to the thefts, leading him to confront the mastermind, Tad Wolfe! by Elliot S. Maggin, Ernie Chan and Inker José Luis García-López in one of his earliest assignments!! "The Mystery Man Who Walked on Air!" Dick Giordano art! Sue and Ralph Dibney are on vacation in Florida when Sue wakes Ralph up to tell him that someone is walking outside their ninth floor window! Ralph chases after the old man who is carrying a birdcage. He tells Ralph he is tired of walking, grabs the bird and flies off. Later Ralph and Sue are sailing when Ralph spots the same man standing on the water. He grabs a fish and swims off. Ralph chases the man onto a dock where the man disappears seemingly through a wall. Ralph enters the building and sees a guard being held at gunpoint as another man robs the place. Ralph takes them down quickly then finds the old man sitting on "Hard Boiled" Harry! After the police take everyone away, Ralph confronts the old man knowing that he is really Barry Allen in disguise. Sue tells them that the mystery was Ralph's Birthday present! TRIVIA: This mystery was shown in two flashback panels in Identity Crisis #1!!
450 - Aug. 1975! "The Cape and Cowl Deathtrap!" by Maggin and then newcomer Walt Simonson! A Assassin is hired to get Batman's cloak and cape by someone who killed a Senator! Batman was undercover as the murderer all along and nails the Assassin! Robin stars in "The Parking Lot Bandit" has art by Al Milgrom and Terry Austin! Dick Grayson and Lori Elton (1st Apperance!) are shopping on their first date when a man, later called the "Parking Lot Bandit," steals a woman's purse. Dick tries to stop him, but is unsuccessful...which leads him to do an investigation and nail the perp in the end! TRIVIA: "The Cape and Cowl Deathtrap" is partially based on the plot of the episode "The Thirteenth Hat" from the Batman 1966 TV show; in which The Mad Hatter plans to get Batman's cowl by any means and in the process AND was also adapted on the similar named episode of Batman: The Animated Series in 1992! The adaptation was also penned by Elliot S. Maggin!!
454 - Dec. 1975! "The Set-Up Caper!" by David Vern Reed, José Luis García-López and Ernie Chan finds Batman fighting Rex Giles, who believes he can overcome Batman after studying his fighting habits, but the Dark Knight uses a different fighting style this time and defeats Giles, who never stood a chance against Batman! After this encounter, Batman is glad to put a wanted criminal behind bars and he is more motivated to confront his next challenge! "The Catch-Me-If-You-Can Crook!" A small-time crook is escaping with his pitiful loot, but Hawkman nabs him when out of nowhere the crook shows incredible power and electrocutes the Hawkman and escapes! Hawkman & Hawkgirl start patrolling the city, expecting a big exploit from the new super-villain! The crook wants to use his magic touch to open the locked doors of the Midway City Government Printing Office, but he only trips the burglar alarm and Hawkman quickly descends on him with the police, but the crook suddenly shears his wings off when he transforms the lasso that was meant to catch him into a deadly, flying saw blade! D'OH! TRIVIA: There's also a Fan Letter from John Heebink...who went on to draw Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD for Marvel Comics!!
