"The Kingdom of the Cobra!" is written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Mike Kaluta and Berni Wrightson!! The mysterious Shadow is breaking up an everyday bank robbery and discovers that one of the felons is someone who is supposed to be in prison. A quick call to the jail only serves to fuel the Shadow's suspicions as the "Warden" says the crook is indeed still in his cell. Margot Lane is sent in undercover as a prison reformer to investigate and finds out that not only is the "Warden" lying, he's not even the real Warden at all!
Unfortunately, this discovery only manages to alert the "Warden,"who is called King Cobra, that soon the Shadow will be on his way. The Shadow's next move involves sending in his operative, Harry Vincent, and goes in himself as a hardened criminal. King Cobra is offering criminals a safe place to flop and an alibi in exchange for a percentage of their illegal gains. But with guile, stealth, a pair of deadly .45 automatics and a plan, the Shadow is planning on killing the snake in his den!
So how did two of the greatest Illustrators in comics wind up working on this issue? Here's what happened: Decades later, Kaluta offered the following account in an interview for Back Issue #10 (May, 2005): "Doing the first issue, there was no deadline, and I took as much time as I needed to do it and I got it in. [By the second issue], I had never really had a deadline [for an assignment] that was 20 penciled and inked pages in two months (or, more ideally, six weeks), and I stumbled badly. I got the book out late, and when the third one came up, I was in this quandary: How am I going to get this one done in the now very compressed time. For some reason, even though he was as busy as could be with Swamp Thing, Bernie came in and helped on the third Shadow issue… Every once and awhile, just for kicks, we’ll sit around and try to figure out who did what on that issue #3. It wasn’t a “penciled by” or “inked by” credit. I would be penciling pages, and he would be penciling pages, and then we would hand them to each other and would start inking!"
