Own a piece of American naval history. This is a shipping trunk that was retrieved from a wall in a garage where it was hanging as a storage cabinet. Upon taking it down, we discovered a clue to its origins. Stenciled on the back (in part) is the following:
To CO IN CHARGE OF FREIGHT TRANSIT
BRANCH NAVAL SHIP OFFICER
FOR COMDR IRWIN T. BROCK, USN
FFT CC NAVAL SUPPLY CENTER, PEARL HARBOR, T.H.
FROM SO NAV SHPYD, BOSTON, MASS
Although there is no way to date it without shipping records, it certainly dates back to when Hawaii was still a territory (i.e., T.H.).
The trunk measures 33" x 48" x 14".
With a piece of glass on top over the stencilling, it could be a nice coffee table and center of conversation. Or it could be rehung as a storage cabinet. Or it could be used as a good storage trunk.
$75. The trunk alone is worth that.
